Friday Cover Share: Cusp of Night & The Alternative

Hello SErs! Happy Friday! 🙂 Harmony here. Today is my turn to share a book cover with you that caught my attention for one reason or another. As you will see from the post title, I couldn’t choose just one this time. … Much like whenever anyone asks me to name my favourite book/author, lols. I just can’t do it!

Both are recent releases and both covers grabbed my wild imagination. I love it when a cover has that magic.

First up is our very own Mae Clair’s newest release: Cusp of Night. Take a look at the image …

Book cover for Cusp of Night, a mystery/suspense novel by author, Mae Clair

This cover grabs me right off. It has mystery and tension, and promises a thriller. And who is that guy in the hoodie? I just HAD to preorder this based on the cover alone. It is reminiscent of many Stephen King books published in the 80s and 90s, which told a story and skewered your eyes so that you couldn’t look away. As Joan mentioned in her cover post at the end of May, which you can find HERE, some of the modern versions have lost that magic, well … for me, at least.

And my second cover is one from Suzanne Burke’s latest book: The Alternative. Take a look at this one …

Having been honoured to be one of the beta readers for this book, I can tell you how apt the burning gavel is. Talk about justice on fire! A simple yet highly effective image that leaves your imagination wide open. For me, this image promises drama and impact, and I love it.

Well, that’s it from me for now. I’d love to know what you think. Have any covers caught your eye lately? Have a wonderful upcoming weekend! 🙂

  1. What a wonderful surprise to wake up to Harmony! How lovely to be included along with Mae Clair’s great cover for “Cusp of Night”, which was a riveting read, and the cover fits it beautifully. I’m so delighted that you loved the cover for “The Alternative” I searched for months to find an image that corresponded with the one that had taken up residence inside my head. (It’s already overcrowded in there.) I found the burning gavel and my mind registered tilt. I’m utterly useless at graphic design and had already discovered that Eeva Lancaster at The Book Khaleesi has a unique talent for it. This cover is the end result. The response to it has been simply amazing. Happy dancing down under style!🎉 Thank you!

  2. Both covers are grabbing and it is obvious they were professionally done. They convey the genre and coordinate with the book titles. I don’t normally blow my own horn on other individual’s sites. I apologize if you find it rude. Yesterday I posted a piece on Book covers and titles. I am seeking advice for fellow bloggers and authors. I invite you to my site and I would appreciate your opinion and comments. Thanks. https://chuckjacksonknowme.com/2018/06/22/book-cover-book-title-or-both/

  3. Harmony, thanks so much for choosing Cusp of Night as one of your covers for the cover share today. My publisher really outdid themselves with this one. I remember asking my editor at one point “shouldn’t I be getting a cover soon?” Apparently, the “big” editor wasn’t happy with the first draft and sent it back to marketing and art for more changes. The fact that they put all of that attention into it, really speaks volumes. I couldn’t be more pleased with the end result.

I also thinks the cover for The Alternative is dramatic and powerful. I was a beta reader on that book as well, and it fits the theme of Suzanne’s marvelous collection of stories. I love the fiery gavel on the black background. Excellent choice!

And I just saw your review of Cusp of Night on Amazon. Made my day Snoopy dance I’m so thrilled you enjoyed it! 🙂

  4. Great selections, Harmony.

I have some Stephen King books from the 80s and 90s, and I don’t think the covers hold a candle to these. The first time I saw the cover for Cusp of Night, it sucked me in. It’s still one of my favorite covers of all time. And the cover for The Alternative is so powerful! You might know (I think I’ve mentioned it before) orange is my favorite color. That cover just grabbed me. It’s vivid, evocative… really well done.

    Like I said, great selections.

  5. They are both great covers, each drawing you into suspense. I’ve read The Alternative and it is powerful. Now I’m preparing to read The Cusp of Night. Thank you for sharing, Harmony. 🙂
