Another week has flown by, and with it comes another list of links to great industry content.
If you haven’t already, please take a look at Harmony Kent’s Harvesting the Crop of Your Writing (several tips for going from idea to published work) and Joan Hall’s If You Build It, Will They Come? (strategies for building fans). And when you’re done, explore the other industry links Story Empire authors found this week. Here they are:
- Adverbs (strategies for eliminating them in fiction and why you don’t want to use them to begin with)
- Crime and Court Info (detective offering real descriptions of the legal system)
- The Hook (five tips to hook the reader in your first five pages)
- Online Writing (the downside to sharing your work through social media)
- Short Stories (five fixes for short fiction problems)
- 7 Essential Skills You Need to Become a Writer (skills to help you through)
- Developing Characters (brainstorming tips and questions to ask)
- The Author Mailing List/Newsletter (building and maintaining it)
- Social Media Time Saves (strategies to avoid wasting time; not the techniques I use, but these are useful tools)
- Setting Research (using Google Maps when you can’t afford to travel)
- Twitter and LinkedIn Joining Ad Bandwagon (running ads on these platforms)
- Author Strategy (plans for writing and marketing; includes branding info)
- Lesser Known Archetypes (three types, plus how they’re used in fiction)
- Using shame in fiction (It’s a powerful tool for character arc)
- Writing Mysteries (seven tips)
- Getting Out of Rewrite Hell Alive (tips for writing/editing)
- To Rant or Not to Rant (sometimes it pays to keep quiet)
- Power Words (alternatives to weak verbs)
- Writing a Woman (avoiding stereotypes when crafting female characters)
- Self-Publishing Checklist (a definitive guide)
- Determining Your Audience (audience age, content, and POV voice)

Many thanks for another great list! I am better prepared this week – using Pocket instead of bookmarking. If only I could solve all my problems so easily! 😉
Enjoy the (3-day for the U.S.) weekend!

Felicia, I love Pocket. I tag posts by editing, writing tips, etc. It’s a great tool.

The tagging is the best part, Joan. Goodbye to categorizing bookmarks!

Pocket? Pocket?
This was new on me. I see Joan is using it too. I was just thinking that there are so many links here I need to go back and explore when I have time. I just Googled Pocket and I’m off to sign up. It sounds like a great tool. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I’ve used it for years, Mae. I go in spurts… I save a bunch of stuff there, then I forget about it for a while. But it’s a handy app.

I never knew about it before. I’m so glad I discovered it. Now to find the time to read what I save!

You’re welcome, Mae! The “go back and explore” was my biggest problem – I always missed something… or forgot the name! 😉 Pocket makes it easy to be organized.
